History. Published in 2000 as proposed standard RFC 2661, L2TP has its origins primarily in two older tunneling protocols for point-to-point communication: Cisco's Layer 2 Forwarding Protocol (L2F) and Microsoft's Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). PPTP (remote access) Using the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), you can provide connections to your network through private tunnels over the internet. The protocol itself does not describe encryption or authentication features. Virtual private network (VPN) tunnels provide confidentiality and integrity for data, over untrusted networks like the Internet. VPN apps can be used to protect data transmissions on mobile devices, and visit web sites that are restricted by location. VPNs can also provide remote employees, gig economy freelance workers and business travelers with access to software applications hosted on Unlike PPTP, it offers excellent level of encryption and security; The protocol encapsulates the data twice, which means double data verification. The protocol is available on not only desktop but also mobile operating systems. L2TP is quite easy to configure on all the operating systems it supports. Cannot define VIP same as untrust if using PPTP as service; Solution: This article applies to ScreenOS 5.0 and higher. To address this problem, enable the VIP multi-port command, which will allow configuration of a VIP service which has more than 1 port it listens to. Without this command, a VIP service can only listen to one port.

See PPP, PPTP and L2F. L2TP/IPsec L2TP does not include encryption but is often used with IPsec in order to provide virtual private network (VPN) connections. See VPN and VPN protocols.

PPTP: Stands for "Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol." PPTP is a networking standard for connecting to virtual private networks, or VPNs . VPNs are secure networks that can be accessed over the Internet, allowing users to access a network from a remote location. This is useful for people who need to connect to an office network from home or Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a protocol (set of communication rules) that allows corporations to extend their own corporate network through private "tunnels" over the public Internet. Effectively, a corporation uses a wide-area network as a single large local area network. A company no longer needs to lease its own lines for Short for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, a new technology for creating Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), developed jointly by Microsoft Corporation, U.S. Robotics, and several remote access vendor companies, known collectively as the PPTP Forum. A VPN is a private network of computers that uses the public Internet to connect some nodes
